Corns and calluses are areas of hard, thickened skin that develop when the skin is exposed to excessive pressure or friction. They commonly occur on the feet and can cause pain and discomfort when you walk.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. The hands, feet and wrists are commonly affected, but it can also cause problems in other parts of the body. There may be periods where your symptoms become worse, known as a flare-up or flare. Swollen feet and ankles are usually as a result of Oedema. This is the medical term for fluid retention in the body. The build-up of fluid causes affected tissue to become swollen. The swelling can occur in one particular part of the body – for example, as the result of an injury – or it can be more general.

Keep your feet clean by washing them every day in warm soapy water, but don’t soak them for too long, as this may destroy the natural oil of your skin. After washing, dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. Apply moisturising cream all over the foot, except for between the toes and use a pumice stone or foot file to gently remove hard skin and calluses. Feet deserve the best, as you depend on them for a lot! Treat your feet to regular care and treatment by a Podiatrist or Chiropodist.
